Résumé :

Being socially excluded is a generally painful experience that most individuals can relate to against the background of their own experiences, for instance, at school or work. The first reflexive reaction to social exclusion is often conceptualized as direct and independent of situational influence. Here I present a different perspective that conceptualizes reactions to ostracism as fundamentally cognitively mediated. This perspective emphasizes the role of individuals’ subjective construal of the objective not-being-part situation. I review several findings that question an unmitigated direct response and suggest that social and physical pain may not overlap as much as previously thought.
